There are a lot of things that can be associated with London, but I guess that romantic canals and boat life are not the first things that come to our minds. Meanwhile, London has an impressive system of canals, which were built hundreds of years ago to transport goods from one parts of the city to the others. Nowadays they are a nice viariety on a London's walks map, but they're also home to quite a big number of people. The occupants of barges and boats are mostly people, who want to live in a slower way, closer to nature, but without moving out from the city. Of course, there's also a lot of people who happen to live there quite accidentaly or simply are looking for a cheaper accomoddation (which is not so obvious nowadays, as one have to pay quite a lot for the moorage, unless someone wants to move to another place every two weeks), but in most cases it's the romantic/nostalgic type. On the other hand, living on a boat is becoming more and more popular amongst rich businessmens and all the other bigwigs.
Jest wiele rzeczy, z którymi może kojarzyć nam się Londyn, ale podejrzewam że niewiele jest osób, które łączą go z romantycznymi kanałami i życiem na barkach. Tymczasem miasto ma całkiem solidną sieć kanałów wodnych sprzed kilkuset lat, które kiedyś służyły do transportu towarów, a obecnie są ciekawym urozmaiceniem tras spacerowych, ale także i domem dla całkiem sporej grupy osób. Na łodziach i barkach mieszkają głównie miłośnicy życia bliżej natury, którzy nie chcą jednak rezygnować z mieszkania w mieście. Są też oczywiście dość przypadkowi mieszkańcy, albo osoby liczące na zmniejszenie w ten sposób kosztów utrzymania (co wcale nie jest zbyt łatwe, bo o ile nie chcemy przenosić się co chwilę w inne miejsce, musimy liczyć się z dość sporą opłatą za cumowanie), ale przeważa typ nostalgiczno-romantyczny. Z drugiej strony mieszkanie na wodzie staje się coraz popularniejsze i posiadanie barki staje się powoli bardzo modne wśród bogatych biznesmenów i różnej maści celebrytów.
The canals spread across a big part of London, so it's not surprising that we can see how the look of the boats changes along the way - from old, little ones with wood burning toves on the east side of the city to huge barges/apartaments in Little Venice.
Kanały ciągną się przez dużą część Londynu, spacerując możemy więc zaobserwować jak zmienia się wygląd zacumowanych barek - od starych, opalanych drewnem łódek we wschodniej części miasta, po barki-apartamenty bliżej centrum, w tzw. Little Venice.
The surroundings also change - we can walk through beautiful parks (on the first picture you can see Victoria Park) and see huge villas in the Regent's Park area and then move to deserted estates in the East (if you're curious about the portraits in the windows, you can read abou the project here".
Zmienia się także krajobraz otaczający kanały, od pięknych parków (na pierwszym zdjęciu Victoria Park) i ogromnych willi w rejonie Regent's Parku, przez pustawe osiedla (jeżeli jesteście ciekawi o co chodzi z portretami w oknach, możecie poczytać o projekcie tutaj), po sypiące się domki w okolicach Old Ford.
But people are not the only creatures who live on the boats. During my walks I have met quite a big number of different animals - from ducks and swans waking up the boat owners every (early) morning, through cats and dogs to more unusual species like warthogs. There is one place, where canal crosses the Zoo in Regent's Park and warthogs and the birds of prey were fortunate enough to get the run with a canal view.
Barki zamieszkują nie tylko ludzie - podczas moich spacerów spotykałam całkiem sporo zwierząt. Od kaczek i łabędzi, budzących mieszkańców łodzi waleniem dziobem w drzwi kabiny, przez psy i koty, po nieco bardziej zaskakujące gatunki, takie jak guźce. Jeden z kanałów przechodzi przez ogród zoologiczny w Regent's Park i wybiegi z widokiem na wodę trafiły się akurat guźcom i drapieżnym ptakom.
Apart from the residential barges, one can quite often see other types of boats. There are bookshops and libraries, coffee places and bars or even services like Tarot cards reading. The waterside has developed a variety of servieces like boat-mechanics or drive-through shops.
Oprócz barek mieszkalnych, dość często można spotkać barki "usługowe" - księgarnie, bary, a nawet trochę mniej typowe usługi ezoteryczne. Rozwinęło się też całe zaplecze usługowe na nadbrzeżu - przystanie z dostępem do bieżącej wody i elektryczności, sklepy, do których można bezpośrednio podpłynąć i zrobić zakupy bez konieczności opuszczania łodzi czy serwisy napraw.
One of the best things about walks along the canals is that in every moment you can go back to the dry streets and have something delicious to eat. One of those nice spots in the neighbourhoos is The Breakfast Club in Spitalsfields. Last Sunday I went there with Marta and Ula and even though we arrived shortly after opening, we had to spend almost an hour, queuing to get in. It was the best dressed queue I've been ever waiting in on a Sunday morning.
W spacerach nad kanałami wspaniałe jest też to, że w dowolnym miejscu można wyjść z powrotem na ulicę i zjeść coś dobrego. Jednym z takich miejsc, które od kanału dzieli tylko krótki spacer, jest The Breakfast Club w Spitalfields (mają też kilka lokali w innych częściach Londynu). W ostatnią niedzielę wybrałam się tam z Martą i z Ulą, i mimo że przyszłyśmy zaraz po otwarciu, musiałyśmy odstać swoje w najbardziej wystylizowanej kolejce, w jakiej kiedykolwiek zdarzyło mi się stać w niedzielny poranek.
Shortly after we've made it inside, we ordered green and orange smoothies and a proper breakfast. Marta chose american pancakes with fruit and vanilla cream, Ula took burrito with scrambled eggs, chorizo and cheese, served with guacamole, sour cream and salsa and I set my mind on falafel wrap. Everything was delicious and the portions were huge.
Kiedy już udało nam dostać się do środka, zamówiłyśmy po owocowym smoothie i konkretnym śniadaniu - Marta zdecydowała się na amerykańskie naleśniki z owocami i syropem klonowym, Ula wzięła burrito z jajecznicą, chorizo i serem, podaną z guacamole, śmietaną i salsą, a ja wybrałam wrapa z falaflem. Wszystko było dobre, a porcje naprawdę solidne.
And last but not least, my biggest discovery of that day - can you see the Smeg fridge on the right? It's a secret door to an underground pub. How cool is that?!
A na koniec hit - widzicie lodówkę po prawej stronie? Po otworzeniu drzwiczek możemy przez nią przejść do ukrytego w piwnicy baru. Uwielbiam takie dziwaczne miejskie odkrycia!
