Klimat panujący na terenie stanu należy do strefy umiarkowanej, o ciepłej odmianie. Szata roślinna składa się z lasów jodłowo-świerkowych, które licznie występują na stokach gór i wzniesień. Największe jezioro to Champlain, a rzeka Connecticut.

Pierwotnymi mieszkańcami Vermontu byli Irokezi. Pierwszym badaczem, który zapuścił się w te rejony w 1609 roku był Samuel de Champlain. W 1666 roku wzniesiono pierwszy fort - St. Anne.

W XIX wieku źródłem gospodarki stała się produkcja mleka, jego przetworów oraz hodowla bydła. Istotną rolę odgrywała uprawa warzyw, owoców i ekploatacja marmurów, granitu i talku. Wtedy też rozwinęła się turystyka, powstały pierwsze hotele w ośrodkach sportów zimowych.
Stolica - Montpelier jest najmniejszą pod względem liczby ludności na całym terenie USA. Liczy zaledwie 8000 mieszkańców. Nazwa nawiązuje do europejskiego francuskiego odpowiednika. Do atrakcji turystycznych można zaliczyć Kellogg-Hubbard Library,gdzie znajduje się kopia fryzu partenońskiego, Muzeum Historyczne w Vermont i Galeria oraz Centrum Sztuki TW Wood.
